Cycle ride to raise funds to improve access

  • Posted

On Thursday 21 February 2013, lawyers at JD Spicer Zeb Solicitors cycled from London to Paris to raise funds for national charity, the Free Representation Unit (FRU). FRU provides legal advice, case preparation and advocacy in tribunal cases for those who could not otherwise obtain legal support, for want of personal means or public funding. The recent withdrawal of public legal aid support in certain areas of legal work has further seen an increase of case referrals to FRU and in turn a need for FRU to increase capacity.

Money raised would be instrumental in training and supporting more advocates, which would increase the capacity of FRU to help more people.

The ride was launched by the Mayor of London Borough of Brent, Cllr Michael Adeyeye who thanked the riders for raising awareness of and supporting an important cause.

Karan Mackay, Chief Officer of FRU, commented that she is “delighted for the substantial money raised by employees of JD Spicer Zeb which will go a long way to assist FRU in continuing to offer support to people in vulnerable situations”.

The ride was supported and sponsored by JD Spicer Zeb Solicitors. Lisa Nicol, a Partner at the Firm stated “FRU do an important work and we are proud to be supporting them as part of our longstanding commitment to our local Community”.

Simon Maughan and Michael Situ both of JD Spicer Zeb lead the ride which covered over 200 miles across 3 days and so far raised close to £2,000.  Donations are still welcomed on www.justgiving.com/Lon-Par-Ride.
