What is false accounting?
According to Section 16 of the Theft act 1968, false accounting refers to the act of deliberately adjusting or altering a company’s financial accounts with the purpose of accumulating financial wealth and/or causing financial loss to another company.
Is false accounting a criminal offence?
As false accounting is considered to be an act of fraud, it is a criminal offence. This means that anyone found guilty of false accounting could be subject to a range of potential punishments.
Who can be charged with false accounting?
False accounting could be committed by one individual within a company, or by a collective group of people who are working together as part of a wider conspiracy. This means that charges could be levelled against anyone who allegedly plays a role in an act of false accounting.
What are the false accounting sentencing guidelines?
The potential punishments that could be handed out for false accounting are varied and depend on a variety of factors. For instance, in some cases a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment may apply.
