Not Guilty on All Counts in Historic Sexual Offence Case - (Snaresbrook Crown Court - June 2026)

Instructed Team:

Litigation lead: Lisa Nicol

Instructed Counsel: Beth O’Reilly KC

JD Spicer Zeb were instructed to represent a stepfather who faced allegations of serious childhood sexual abuse against his stepdaughter. Our client strongly denied the allegations from the outset, and we were engaged to provide the best possible defence to clear his name.

Background

The case centred on historical allegations made by our client’s stepdaughter. She alleged repeated abuse during her childhood over an 8-year period, including sexual touching, assault by penetration, and rape.

Police Investigation

Our client was invited to attend a voluntary interview at the police station after the report. Despite the unexpected and historic nature of the claims, he cooperated fully with the investigation from the outset.

Our client was clear from the outset that the allegations were a complete fabrication, fuelled by a breakdown in the family unit.

Charge

Two years after his police interview, our client was charged to attend Court. Our team was instructed immediately.

Defence Strategy and Investigation

We conducted a comprehensive review of all available evidence. Due to the historical nature of the case, the prosecution relied heavily on the Complainant’s testimony.

The defence team assembled an extensive collection of digital evidence, including social media communications, school/medical reports, and family photographs. These provided essential context and highlighted inconsistencies within the Complainant’s account.

Further, we interviewed and obtained statements from potential defence witnesses of fact. These witness accounts heavily contradicted the Complainant’s version of events and supported the theory that the allegations were motivated by the family breakdown.

Character witnesses were also identified and interviewed to demonstrate to the jury that the allegations were inconsistent with our client as a man of good character.

Outcome

After an 11-day trial in June 2026, the jury deliberated for just two hours before returning a verdict of not guilty, acquitting our client of all eight charges.

After a six years since his first police interview, we are pleased that our client was found not guilty and can finally put this matter behind him.

Our Client Care

The emotional toll on our client was immense. The false allegations led to significant mental health struggles, and seven years of anxiety and stress. Our team was available 24/7 to provide both legal advice and personal support, answering questions and reassuring our client through a highly stressful time.

Once the verdict was delivered, our client was finally able to resume his life with his family, free from the cloud of false allegations.

This case serves as a reminder that false allegations of historic sexual offences can have devastating consequences on an individual’s family, mental health, and reputation. It also highlights the critical importance of the Crown’s continuous duty to review cases, which can often be overlooked at the defendant’s expense.

We continue to offer a compassionate, comprehensive service to individuals facing serious historic sexual allegations, ensuring they receive the best possible defence. We are dedicated to securing fair and just outcomes for those who find themselves in difficult and life-changing circumstances due to false accusations.
