Not Guilty Serious Sexual Offences Against Student - Crown Court 2026
Instructed Team:
Litigation lead: Sanjay Cholera
Instructed Counsel: Louise Sweet KC
JD Spicer Zeb were instructed to represent a teacher who faced allegations of serious sexual assault against a student. Our client strongly denied the allegations from the outset, and we were engaged to provide the best possible defence to clear his name.
Background
The case centred on allegations made by a student following a one-on-one lesson with our client. She alleged that, during the lesson, our client committed serious sexual offences against her, namely sexual assault and assault by penetration.
Police Investigation
Our client was arrested and taken to the police station where our team was instructed immediately. We advised our client to provide a full, truthful account of the events to the police. We ensured that a detailed statement was taken, covering all aspects of the lesson in question. A senior partner was engaged at once to conduct the case.
Defence Strategy and Investigation
We conducted a comprehensive review of all available evidence. The prosecution relied heavily on the evidence of the Complainant and witnesses of recent complaint.
We worked closely with our client to obtain a nuanced understanding of his teaching specialism. The Defence Team then assembled a sophisticated document bundle to assist the jury in grasping our client’s teaching methodology. We contacted our client’s former colleague who provided a witness statement supporting his account of what had occurred during the lesson.
Instructed Counsel, Louise Sweet KC, an expert in defending serious sexual allegations, meticulously cross-examined prosecution witnesses during the trial. Her strategic questioning revealed numerous inconsistencies in the Complainant’s accounts and significantly undermined the reliability of her evidence. This created significant doubt in the minds of the jury.
Outcome
After a trial in June 2026, the jury deliberated for just four hours before returning verdicts of not guilty, acquitting our client of all charges.
We are pleased that after several years of uncertainty our client was found not guilty and can finally put this matter behind him.
Client Care
The emotional toll on our client was immense. Our team was available 24/7 to provide both legal advice and personal support, answering questions and reassuring our client through a highly stressful time.
This case serves as a reminder that false allegations of sexual offences, especially serious sexual assault, can have devastating consequences on an individual’s career, mental health, and reputation.
We continue to offer a compassionate, comprehensive service to individuals facing serious sexual allegations, ensuring they receive the best possible defence. We are dedicated to securing fair and just outcomes for those who find themselves in difficult and life-changing circumstances due to false accusations.
